Same for the Gatewatch (and the reason it took them so long to acknowledge it had failed) - do you think there were significant numbers of players who were like "gee, what we really want is for Magic to try and emulate the success of the Justice League and the MCU?" No. The reaction to the original Lorwyn 5 was tepid at best, say, but WotC kept pushing them because the point wasn't to appeal to their established base. This means that players' reaction to planeswalkers isn't really that important. They see them as central to the IP and their ability to cross-market WotC in ways other than just the tabletop game. WotC really wants to push planeswalkers and has ever since Lorwyn.
